More than medals: Bernardo Olivera on growth, resilience, and the true meaning of archery

Some athletes are remembered for the medals they win. Others leave a lasting impact through the lessons they share.

In a recent conversation with Jarryd Greitschus, Brazilian Olympian Bernardo Olivera reflected on the moments that shaped his journey—not just as an elite archer, but as a person. Fresh from the 2025 World Youth Championships in Winnipeg, Bernardo opened up about his early days in the sport, the challenges of chasing an Olympic dream, and why success in archery goes far beyond the scorecard.

The People Behind the Journey

When Bernardo thinks back to his first international competition, he doesn't remember his ranking or his scores. Instead, he remembers the kindness of another archer who welcomed him to the event and made him feel like he belonged.

That moment became one of the defining memories of his career.

"It's the people I've met that I cherish the most," Bernardo shared.

Despite coming from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds, archery has given him friendships and connections that have lasted a lifetime.

Chasing an Olympic Dream

Growing up in Brazil, becoming an Olympian wasn't an easy path. Bernardo balanced engineering studies with training while pursuing a dream that often felt out of reach.

A conversation with Australian Olympic gold medallist Natalie Cook helped change his perspective. Rather than simply encouraging him to dream big, she challenged him to fully commit to his goal.

That mindset shift became one of the turning points in his career and eventually led him to represent Brazil at the Olympic Games.

Growth Isn't Always Comfortable

One of the most emotional moments in the interview came as Bernardo spoke about leaving the coach who had guided him for 14 years. It wasn't a decision made out of conflict—it was made out of growth.

Sometimes, even the strongest partnerships reach a point where change is necessary to continue improving. Bernardo spoke with immense gratitude for everything his coach had done while acknowledging that taking the next step required courage. It's a reminder that growth often comes with difficult decisions.

Archery Is About More Than Shooting Arrows

Throughout the conversation, one message stood out above all else: archery is a tool for personal development.

Yes, the sport teaches technique and precision, but it also teaches patience, emotional control, resilience, discipline, and humility.

Bernardo believes that every challenge on the shooting line is also an opportunity to grow off it. Rather than chasing perfection, he encourages archers to embrace the pursuit of continual improvement.

As he explains, perfection is like chasing a rainbow—you never quite reach it, but the journey toward it makes you a better person.
